Probably not top of everyone's list of places to visit, Colac is a smallish town with a very large lake. I was interested in visiting the lake and the campsite there as it was a free one.
For convenience though I stayed in the town.
The Camp Site - Central Caravan Park, Colac
Official Web SiteThe people there were friendly enough, but this was not a picturesque location, being a showground. I was able to get some shade but alongside a road and by a metal fence which I could lock the bike against.
Kitchen facilities were fine. Here I am knocking up a porridge for breakfast.
Here's a typical scene inside the tent. Excuse the leg.
Lake Colac
Lake Colac is very peaceful. There is a free camp site by the lake as I mentioned earlier, and there are toilets there and water, so it's quite convenient. It took about 30 mins to cycle from the town to the Lake camp site.I tried putting the solar charger on the back of the bike, and it worked very well.
The "view" out of the tent, whilst listening to cars going by!
The Rest of the Time
Bushman is supposed to be one of the very best insect repellants. I tried it here for the first time. In fact it works well against mosquitos but doesn't repel the larger sand flies at all.
Chinese food in the evening. Very lovely and quite a luxury.
After 2 days in Colac, off to Warrnambool now on the train.
